Traffic is still my most important criteria for investing in links.

Seems your approach to that issue is diametrically opposite to mine ;)

Even if it works currently, Matt & his friends from Google’s Spam Team might fix it sooner than you think. Then “test link” will pass your little experiment and it will be still easy to rank for “hamlet powered seo k2″ even if all paid links on a site were marked as spam, ’cause their power could be decreased, not removed at all…

Let's use it while it lasts, then :-)

BTW have you ever seen paid text links that drive ANY traffic?

If you are talking about buying totally off-topic links on high PageRank sites, I stopped doing that back in 2005. I did use to get a few clicks, but not really converting traffic.

I use the technique I explain here primarily to evaluate directories and paid reviews. Traffic is still my most important criteria for investing in links.

David - You have to pay to be considered for inclusion on some of the high quality directories. This is a good way to check if the investment is worth it ;-)

That's a pretty good idea for anyone who thinks its worth their while purchasing links. That is also a good way that people can check if their site has some sort of block on it.

I also use long tails for experimenting. Usually 'My Service in My Town' or occasionaly a GoogleWhack.

Out of interest - how quickly do you find the Google Webmaster Console adds links once it’s found them?

GWC can add the links in a matter of days.

Some good tips there mate. I like the bit about the long-tail search term to check for link juice. Never really thought about doing that but it's something I may try in the future.
