I've found link baiting to be incredibly easy if you're willing to be obnoxious. If you're willing to stick the knife into people in the industry.

Having said that - I don't do it. Its easy and you get links but you ultimately pay the price by looking like a troll.

Its all about the quality. So I've found tutorials, tips, help, etc are the best way. Much like this post in fact!! :)

Extremely useful information, i had in the back of my mind about posting information and useful articles would really make a difference, as long as this would be information that others would link to, but i haven't got round to realising the power of this, and where is the correct place to make these posts, and even what to talk about.

Obviously when making posts on sites that are likely to generate alot of links, the site i am posting to link to would be linked to from a range of pageranks, which i would be scared would reduce my pagerank. However, with the amount of exposure we get its going to be worth it.

I agree with Mr. Multivar: "The blogosphere has made it much easier to build links I think."

I have spent many hours submitting my site to directories and with some small success.

Article submission to Ezine etc. also produced some small success.

Biggest results for me have come from commenting--on Blogs and online newspapers.

This was one of the better summary articles I've read on this subject.

The important thing to remember about this discussion is that while everyone would love for the links to come to them, it is important to put in a lot of time and hard-work chasing them before in order to gain the credibility necessary to be able to let the links chase you.

Linkbait is the classic risk/reward scenario. It does not work most of the time, but when it does it can be a 'home run' or even a 'grand slam'.

Concentrating on both is the best plan.

Just ran into this site via Google. Great article. Been using Digg and Twitter myself, but have not really noticed any great traffic from them. Google in fact beats everybody else in delivering traffic to my blog. Shall try the points outlined here.

I've found the easiest places to get links are from Digg, Delicious etc. They're a good short term option for building interest and, of course, they drive traffic which is the ultimate aim of any site!

Being able to choose your own title and surrounding text is handy for that all important anchor text.

I have heard that Digg can be choosy about you always Digging your own content though, so like most techniques, don't abuse it an be honest - if it's not something that people would be interested in then don't Digg it.

I have read on a few posts that the link anchor text is important to google, and also the theme of the website. How does google know what the theme of the site is. Is it based on the keyword that google finds when indexing the site, and then guessing the best theme, or does it maybe pick this up from the categories that the url is listed in on directory sites.

Thanks

For a small site like mine it is really difficult to get the inbound links you crave for, I don't seem to have the time or the resources to chase those links that would be most valuable to my site, but without them my link baiting won't work because once I have created some link bait there is nobody to see it. It's like a vicious circle for me.

The rotating anchor text code is a nice idea.

What's working best for you at the moment Hamlet? I think focusing on social link building becomes a much more productive use of time as 'link chasing' becomes progressively more difficult once you've picked all the low-hanging fruit.

I'll be starting a new blog in earnest later this week and will be experimenting with some of the techniques I've observed over the last few months from linkbaiters like Lyndoman and other successful bloggers. Will let you know how it goes.

In this days, link baiting seems to be the quickest way to success and the more natural links you can attract, the easier it becomes to include some bought/traded links without being caught. So I agree, a mix of everything is the best approach.

Great post, Hamlet. I've found some difficulty myself in getting agencies to go for offering a link bait option to clients because of how risky it is. With straightforward link acquisition there is a guaranteed deliverable, at least for the most part. With link bait that fails - well, you've got nothing to show for it. It helps to have a track record of success, but as you say, it's never guaranteed. It's just difficult to get clients on board for a tactic that is, at best, spotty with results.

That said, creating high-quality content at the site in question is always a priority. A focus on the entertainment/education and overall pleasure of the user is key - and even individual attempts at link bait fall short, a solid content base will always help a site build link popularity in the long run.

As usual, very thoughtful post raising important issues.

Great post, Hamlet. I’ve found some difficulty myself in getting agencies to go for offering a link bait option to clients because of how risky it is. With straightforward link acquisition there is a guaranteed deliverable, at least for the most part. With link bait that fails - well, you’ve got nothing to show for it. It helps to have a track record of success, but as you say, it’s never guaranteed. It’s just difficult to get clients on board for a tactic that is, at best, spotty with results.

I tend to focus on the interesting ways to build links and traffic such as commenting on blogs, writing content and producing things such as templates and software.

I don't care for the tedious stuff such as submitting to directories.

The blogosphere has made it much easier to build links I think.
